Finished translating "The Bridegroom Training Diary of Tsumugi-sama", as well as "Chindere ~Kindly Offer Up Your Penis~" Currently working on a mistake-fixing, tone-tightening comprehensive edit of Tsumugi-sama. My next project will be "Sadistic Sisters R*pe Boy".

Quick Update
Hey all, quick progress update. I have some good news and one unfortunate bit.
The Tsumugi-sama edit is proceeding smoothly. I had a lot of dumb crap to fix - at least 6 lines I counted editing the script for the first day, Tsumugi's was name in hiragana. I was also planning to have her speak mainly without contractions early on to emphasize the change in character voice on the second day, but she uses contractions like 30 times in the first day. Oops. I'm glad to be at a point now where I can look back at my old work and actually face up to those mistakes and fix them. At present, it's maybe about 30 percent done.
DoS hacking was making rapid progress until last Thursday, when urgent work forced me to drop everything for about 4 days. Prior to that point, I had successfully built and tested a program that let me stack the text line-by-line for super-easy editing, and repack that easy-edit format into a game-readable file. So the script is fully editable, and I may release an easy-use version of those srp.pac editing tools for people interested in looking at other Lune games. Next I have to tweak the system data to see if I can alter the size of the message window, as English text tends to take up more space and get squeezed out.
Lastly, and most unfortunately, tumblr is going through a series of stupid policy changes. Most relevant to this blog is that explicit content will be available to users only as of July 5th, 2017. I'm going to be picking up and moving to another host (possibly livedoor) in the near future. I'll post a link when that's taken care of.

srp.pac Progress - Working Arbitrary Text Insertion
I have successfully gotten arbitrary text into doSnesan.exe without problems. Translation is now fully possible. Further improvements will come through making the process a more automated one. Currently, the way I do it has me inserting my arbitrary text by hand. That's fine for one line, but less so for a game running a little under 2 megabytes in script size.
My process was a little complicated and convoluted (I compiled 22 separate test versions of the first scene while ironing it out and testing various possibilites), but I figured out that the game's system for reading lines essentially boils down to this:
1. A 2-byte header bit in each line contains the length of the upcoming dialogue line in bytes, including system-related characters. This length is in hex, with the first and last bytes flipped. i.e. for a 6-byte long file, the header would be \x60\x00.
2. Every line, after the header, starts with 2 blank bytes (likely due to the way the value in the header is stored), followed by a 2-byte indicator of whether the line is narration (no changes), character thought (parentheses), spoken dialogue (Japanese quotation brackets), or voiced spoken dialogue (Japanese quotation brackets and a place for input of the relevant voice file). The overall effect means the Yukari and mortalvyses lines above look like so in binary:
(Each ascii character is a single byte, 0\x00 is the subheader for spoken dialogue, `\x00 is the subheader for a thought.)

So, by plugging those in at the right value and re-encoding (flipping every byte \x28->\x82) and re-packing (adding the header and putting all the files into one big file), one gets the beginnings of what will hopefully be a very fun game for English natives in this filthy niche to finally enjoy.

Strictly speaking, there are still a number of things I don't understand, cheif among them being the mechanisms by which sound, backgrounds, and character art are loaded. I plan to look into each of those in time. The mechanism they operate under will likely be quite clear given analysis of enough examples (which the text is obviously full of). Everything is there in the binary. And bah, proof of concept being completed is cause enough for celebration.
One other sleight issue that may be difficult to overcome is that speech lines are given Japanese-style bracket quotes in a way that seems hardwired into the executable. I'd want to fix this if I were going to sell it in a store for a major company, but then I wouldn't have had to hack it to the binary-encoded roots like this in the first place. Likewise, I'll have to use shift-JIS format commas because regular commas have hard-wired code purposes that mess things up if you use them normally in a sentence.

Also, a footnote. All this work here doesn't mean I'm not going to be working on other games. This is a lifetime-sized project for one person who's doing it in their spare time. I'm going to chip it in small doses, in parallel with other projects. Other games are fun, but this one is my #1 all-time.

Chindere v1.0 - Final Release
Here we go! Chindere, the whole thing, is now translated and ready to play. Not only did I finish translating the Klaudia route, I also went back through the previous patches and made a large number of small QC-type edits to make for more natural English, and hence a more pleasant playing experience. By the by, my plan for the immediate future is:
1) Study more Japanese, as I'm taking an exam for formal translator qualifications at the beginning of next month.
2) Edit Tsumugi-sama for a truly final release. I've played through parts of my last patch recently and *shudders*. I can do better there with what I've learned on this project. Plus, a full-playthrough edit actually doesn't take that long (Chindere's touch-ups ran about 10 days, and it was a similar length script).
3) Start on Sadistic Sisters R*pe Boy, which won the poll by a respectably wide margin. Thanks again to everyone who voted.

Huge srp.pac Milestone
Allow me to explain this picture. Because it's cool. As I mentioned elsewhere on the blog, I've wanted to translate ドSなお姉さんは好きですか? for years. What stopped me was a highly opaque game engine hiding the script and preventing its repacking. Well, now we're mostly through all that. The above picture shows me inserting English text into a fully functional copy of the game's executable. In order to do this, I went through the following steps:
1. Realized the text in each file had the first and lasty bytes flipped as the encryption measure. (e.g. \x01 becomes \x10, \x28 becomes \x82)
2. Wrote a byte-flipping decryption program.
3. Made edits to the srp.pac file in attempts to replace original data with small edits. All attempts caused the game to crash instantly.
4. Realized that the crashes happened because the header, which exists at the beginning of the file, specifies the exact length and position of each file in binary-encoded long variables
(Analyzed the bejeezus out of asmodean's exdosn extractor to figure out how the header worked, having it print every relevant variable at every step and spending hours poring over what it meant).
5. Wrote a program to take extracted data and re-pack the original, unaltered extracted data using the header guidelines I discovered from step 4. Successfully ran my re-packed srp.pac with no problems.
6. Altered the file to include a word of english unicode text. This allowed the game to load the title screen, but it couldn't handle the first line of dialogue.
7. Realized the game used the shift-JIS alphanumeric characters at one point in the story, tried those. The result, the photo above and a game that proceeds through the text like nothing happened.
So far so good. The one remaining problem (and as I see it, this is the last significant obstacle before I can call the game truly cracked) is that something in the game code, which is also in hard-to decipher binary, specifies the exact number of characters in a line of dialogue. Add an extra 'H' or 'o' and it will still load the changed line properly, but won't advance to the next one. Further investigation into that code is needed, but I should have loads of examples to draw from to break the dialogue-length code. There would be other minor bits of code I'd have to write to make the actual act of translating with Shift-JIS as the necessary keyset more efficient, but they're comparatively trivial and I've figured them out in theory.
TLDR: Almost there, goddammit!
Oh, and it's also possible to translate Bigaku, an old hedonistic classic, if one really doesn't mind underscores serving in place of spacebars. Maybe there is another character that fits, but in any case I probably wouldn't translate this game even if I could. While some of the scenes are insanely good, it's just as long as DoS and a little less my jam.
P.S. Chindere is, as of now, 100% translated. I'm holding off on the release for a few days so I can go through the whole thing once slowly. I want to give it a good edit and coat of polish for a truly final release.

Queens of the After 5
In between other things, I recently found time to read a 3-volume 4koma manga by Rokutan Ryou. It's called Queens of the After-5, and it follows a main character who works 2 jobs - office worker and dominatrix. It follows the main character, Madoka, in her turbulent journey of self-discovery through the world of SM. The author is a former dominatrix, so it contains lots of practical SM trivia facts and situations based on real experiences. Humor-wise it's pretty average, but from the second volume on Madoka really starts developing as a character and the story takes off. It's only available in Japanese as far as I know.

Chindere Progress: Klaudia Route Deux
Still making steady progress on the Klaudia route. 142kb translated, 63 kb remaining. The remainder is split among 2 fairly long scenes, but once they're done, so is the game (the script still deserves a hard edit, tho).
Poll update: Response has been terrific, 300+ votes from 100+ voters. The top 2 are still pretty close, so I'm going to wait until the end of the current project to call a winner.

I enjoy translating femdom visual novels and would like to continue after finishing my current project. But I'd also like to cater to other people's interests, and do things a lot of people would like. So, after some consideration, I've narrowed the pool of software-feasible candidates into a few that I wouldn't mind giving a shot. I'm going to be doing a lot of weighing the pros and cons of each choice myself over the next month, but I would like to solicit people's opinions. So here's a poll of the 4 games I'm considering at this point. Pick whichever ones you'd like. I may not lock myself into the results of the poll, but if something turns out as an overwhelming favorite, it'd be in my best interests to work on it.

Meido ni Natta Boku (Sadistic Alice)

Summary: When the servants of a rich household all quit due to claims of sexual harassment by the owner, young Miku is drafted into service by his childhood friend and daughter of the family Ayaka. And there's no way Ayaka will let him work as a butler!
Characters:
-Ayaka, the daughter of a rich family, is a proud, haughty, me-first tsundere hiding a secret between her legs.
-Saeko, the head maid and the only one not to have quit. She prefers getting her revenge on men from inside the system, and will vigorously punish the in-training Miku for any mistakes made.
-Miku, the protagonist, is a newcomer maid with a lot to learn.
Highlight Scene: Lots to pick from, but I like the penultimate scene in Saeko's route. It's a turning point for Miku as a character, and they shift from regularly timid to outright worshipping her in their every action, both in dialogue and inside their own head. The contents of the dialogue? Learning to 'properly' beg for punishment.
Scenario Size: 327 kb
Notes: Nice and short, about 60-50% as long as the previous 2 games I've worked on. Saeko is just unbelievably great and the game shows her in all sorts of cool outfits. Ayaka's route offers a bit of true love in the equation, which can be nice. Saeko's voice work is *fire* hot, and of course the art by Majikoro is drop-dead gorgeous.

Kyou Kara Pet (Inohead Studio)

Summary: When Toshi is caught masturbating in a school bathroom by two women he admires, the older of the two decides to negotiate the situation in a way that everyone can enjoy.
Characters:
Tomoe is an English teacher with an outwardly kind personality. However, she really enjoys inflicting pain on men, and relishes a dominant role.
Shizuna is a no-nonsense girl who often belittles the protagonist. She's also popular with guys, to the extent that other girls are jealous of her.
Toshi, the protagonist, is a timid submissive at heart, but he can be dependable when need be.
Highlight Scene: Toshi takes the day off from school to bury his face in Tomoe's pussy, but Tomoe goes to school anyway. Makes for exciting times in the classroom.
Scenario Size: 410 kb
Notes: Of the 4 up for voting, this offers the gentlest version of SM. Comparatively few examples of risky or extreme fetishes, aside from some exhibitionism. Not an insult, by the way. I quite enjoyed the game; it is well-written, nicely polished, and appealing in its own consensual-play fashion.

Summary: Kou's parents aren't going to be home for a while, and he's celebrating his birthday with his sisters. However, they take advantage of the situation to make him their bitch in all sorts of ways.
Characters:
-Arisa, the older sister, is the student council president and captain of the volleyball team. She prefers to dominate psychologically, through words and situations.
-Ruka, the younger sister, is the anchor of the karate team. She has an energetic personality, and she tends to dominate Kou using her physical strength.
-Kou, the middle child and protagonist, is a small, timid person who has no clue what lies in store for him, and even less capacity to resist.
Highlight Scene: Kou is forced to write out a birthday present for one sister - a formal slave contract. The birthday girl dictates while the other fucks him in the behind.
Scenario Size: 624 kb
Notes: My personal favorite Joou-sama soft game. The protagonist is really taken for everything he's worth in a sexual sense.
Sadistic Domination by Bitch Girls (Joou-sama Soft)

Summary: Kouji's life was going well enough when Alice, an old acquaintance, transferred into his class. He won't be anywhere near normal after she's had her way with him.
Characters:
-Alice is a brash, selfish bully who tormented the protagonist in his youth because he said she had a weird name. Now they meet again after several years, and she's become a gyaru. She's very honest about what she wants.
-Kouji is a pale-faced introverted member of the student council. All of the above will change when Alice comes back to town. One of the main appeals of this script is how significantly you see his personality shift throughout the game.
-This game has several minor characters with voiced roles, but they don't have significant individual personality beyond being Alice's gyaru friends.
Highlight Scene: The protagonist goes into a tanning bed and symbolically completes the process of transformation the game's narrative revolves around. Attention to detail in this scene is fantastic, right down to the little tan tattoos Alice has sketched on.
Scenario Size: 784 kb
Notes: Time-wise and in terms of general degree of difficulty, this would probably be the most difficult. If I did do it, I'd probably wind up chunking it into 5 patches rather than 3. But I hear some people like it, and translating gyaru-speak would certainly represent a fun challenge. And as I've been saying in the summary, the characterization in the narrative is quite compelling.

Chindere Progress: Klaudia Route
Happy to report I've finished a good half of the 18 scenes on the Klaudia route in Chindere. That's about 74kb of content down, 128 kb to go. Point is, progress is steady and I should be able to finish in the next 2 months if things don't go belly-up.

Partial Success Extracting Text from srp.pac for Editing
Since basically the game's release in 2010, I've been trying to extract the scenario data for "ドSなお姉さんは好きですか?". Initially, I just wanted it to fiddle around with it, but as time passed the urge to translate has only grown stronger. Unfortunately, the format for the game's script was buried in a seemingly gibberish srp.pac file.
So today I'm happy to report a very big success in my effort to read the data. The breakthrough came when I decided to search some Japanese terms for information. It turns out someone had a solution on a 2-year-old message thread. Apparently, the actual script portion of the data had a basic encryption placed on it, with the first and last bits of each byte flipped. After a little bit of struggle with byte manipulation, I was able to get readable shift-JIS data for the game's entire scenario
At present, I'm still trying to get my translations running in the original game engine. Though I can edit the srp.pac file and re-encode it, the slightest of changes made to the source file causes the .exe to show a black screen and crash after a short interval. I'm working on that, but, if worse comes to worst, I do have access to all the game data, and it wouldn't be impossible to just repackage it into another engine if need be. At this point I rather suspect the game left concise guidelines as to how big each file is in terms of characters, which, if so, may be difficult to get around. Would like to avoid those complications, but as long as I've already come this far, I'd like to hack it all the way.
